Having an interest in natural plants as medicine began early. It was the smell of wild peppermint that grew along the banks of the cold water creeks on our families ranch. Anytime I had friends over, we would play in the swimming hole and chew on mint leaves. Then in late July the ruby red wild strawberries would peek behind grass and leaves.
The love of natural foods and medicine continued to grow into my adult life.
When I was a young mother, my middle son came down with a terrible flu. He couldn’t keep anything down for over a day, and I was starting to get really worried. I had just bought a book on wild plant medicine, and in it, I read that Purple Thistle Blossoms could help with vomiting.
We had some growing wild near our home, so I went outside and gathered a few. I made a simple tea and offered it to him. He sipped a little—and didn’t throw it up. He had a bit more, and still held it down.
It was such an incredible feeling—to be able to help him with something so simple and natural. Just a wild plant, some love, and a bit of trust in the wisdom of the earth.
